Happy Independence Day!
On this 233rd anniversary of the nation’s independence, we thank all of those who came before us for securing and maintaining that independence and freedom. We especially thanks those who sacrificed their lives for their fellow citizens and future generations of citizens such as ourselves. In addition, we thank the current members of the armed services for guaranteeing that freedom at much personal risk and sacrifice.
As we recently wrote in Geographic Good Fortune, we thank God for the good fortune of being born in this great nation during this unprecedented era of prosperity and freedom. We doubt that we deserve it, but as we often pray at Mass: “do not consider what we truly deserve, but grant us your forgiveness.” As we finally begin to mature, we have started to appreciate our good fortune, and so we also pray that our elected leaders are up to the task, and do not knowingly or unwittingly destroy our good thing.
Finally, besides that thanksgiving we also pray that citizens of every nation will some day enjoy the same freedoms and responsibilities that we, as a citizen of the United States, enjoy. Amen.
